Civil society demands election of Mongla Pourashava, removal of mayor

Under the auspices of the members of SUJAN (Sushaner Janya Nagarik), Nagorik Sachetan Samaj and civil society a human chain was formed at Chowdhury Mor within Mongla Pourashava in Bagerhat district on Sunday morning demanding the election Tafshil (schedule) for holding a fresh election of the (Mongla) Pourashava and the immediate removal of the present Mayor whose term already expired in the year 2015. A large number of people different professions also participated in the human chain, according to delayed report received here..

The last election of Mongla Port Pourashava was held on January 23 in the year 2011. In the election Md. Zulfikar Ali, the then Secretary of Mongla Poura BNP was elected Mayor and most of the posts of Councilors were bagged by his BNP and followers. Since then Zulfikar Ali and his (supporter) councilors have been ruling the Pourashava (for the last 10 years).

The speakers added, though their term was expired in the year 2015; no election of the Pourashava has been held so far and the BNP Jamat oriented Mayor and councilors are still reaming in their posts under the shadow of powerful one or ones hitherto unknown. As a result, strong agitation, discontentment and dissatisfaction prevailing among the citizens of the Pourashava. So, the speakers strongly demanded the declaration of election Tafshil immediately by the Election Commission for a fresh election of the Pourashava and the immediate dismissal of the Mayor.

The Mayor and his councilors already filed a writ petition in the High Court with a view to retaining in the power and foil the fresh election of the Pourashava. They added, the term of the present office-bearers ended in the month of December.

And accordingly, the Election Commission declared the schedule for election of the Pourashav in the month of November in the same year (2015). But with the instigation of the Mayor, his supporters filed case in the court over the boundary intricacies of the Pour Wards. As a result, the Election Commission postponed the electron.
