Humane Society fares well despite COVID-19

There is something about having a pet that helps brighten a day, relieves stress and brings love to a family.

At the Humane Society of North Central Florida, the adoptions are at 90% of where they would ordinarily be in a non-pandemic environment. An impressive rate considering how COVID-19 has made life more challenging.

But make no mistake, area residents love their dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.

“We have been presently surprised by how many adoptions we have been able to do,” said Margot DeConna, director of advancement at the Humane Society of North Florida. “Since March 16, when our shelter closed for two months, we have done 1,000 adoptions.”

Those interested in adopting cannot just go to the Humane Society on Northwest Sixth Street and pick their dog or cat. First, go to the Humane Society of North Central Florida’s website and choose

Protect your pets: Humane Society urges residents to care for animals in heat wave

SAN DIEGO — The weekend will be miserably hot in many parts of the county, and the San Diego Humane Society is urging residents to keep a close eye on their furry friends.

The group released a list of 10 tips for keeping your pets cool and safe:

  1. Always provide plenty of cool, clean water for your animal. When away from home, carry a thermos with fresh water.
  2. Leave your pets at home as much as possible. While you may think that they will be lonely, they will be much more comfortable in your cool home than riding in a hot car.
  3. If you must take your pet along for the ride, don’t leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle. Even with the windows open, a parked car can quickly become a furnace. If the temperature outside is

A Humane World

By Kitty Block and Sara Amundson

Consistent with the recommendations in Wildlife Markets and COVID-19, the Humane Society International report released earlier this week, and our own messaging on the pandemic, Senators Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.), Representatives Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) and Michael McCaul (R-Texas) and more than sixty of their colleagues have sent an urgent letter seeking action from three major global health entities. In their communication to the Directors-General of the World Health Organization, the World Organization for Animal Health and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, they asked

Emergency Foster Adoptions
We have over 350 pets in foster homes, and we are so very thankful for the wonderful care they are receiving in this time of need! The end goal though is to find these animals permanent loving homes, and we have developed a system to help us do that! Foster families have been sending us updates and photos in hopes that they can help their foster pet get adopted, and they can now be viewed on our special Emergency Foster Adoptions page!

“We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.”
