Native American Constitution and Law Digitization Project

Native American Constitution and Law Digitization Project

Coordinated by

National Indian Law Library
The University of
Oklahoma
Law Library
and The National Indian
Law Library
of the
Native American
Rights Fund

This Project is a cooperative effort among the University
of Oklahoma Law Center
  and the National
Indian Law Library
(NILL), and Native American tribes providing
access to the Constitutions, Tribal Codes, and other legal documents.
Project Coordinators are David Selden (NILL) and Marilyn Nicely (OU).

Tribal constitutions and codes are the heart of self-government for over
500 federally recognized tribes, and are the lifeblood of Indian
sovereignty. The University of Oklahoma Law Center Library and the
National Indian Law Library work with tribes whose government documents
appear on this web site; these tribal documents are either placed online
with the permission of the tribes, or they are U.S. Government documents,
rightfully in the public domain.

The Electoral Integrity Project (EIP)
joins the United States Studies Centre (USSC), established in 2007,
as another heavily politicized initiative which compromises the
independence of Australia’s oldest university (see Anderson 2010).

Freedmen and Southern Society Project

No event in American
history matches the drama of emancipation.

accompanied the defeat of the world’s most powerful slaveholding
class and freed a larger number of slaves than did the end of slavery in all
other New World societies combined. Clothed in the
rhetoric of biblical prophecy and national destiny and born of a
bloody civil war, it accomplished a profound social revolution.

The Freedmen and Southern Society Project was established in 1976 to capture the essence of that revolution by depicting the drama
of emancipation in the words of the participants: liberated
slaves and defeated slaveholders, soldiers and civilians, common
folk and the elite, Northerners and Southerners.

Drawing upon the rich resources of the
National Archives
of the United States
