A pair of freshmen series has been dropped from Netflix’s lineup — including one that had already scored a second season.

Teen mystery The Society and coming-of-age dramedy I Am Not Okay With This have both been axed at the streamer, according to our sister site Deadline. Netflix confirmed in a statement that the cancellations were swayed by the coronavirus pandemic, which impacted production schedules and budgets on both series.

“The Society” will not return for a second season as planned at Netflix, while the streamer is also not moving forward with a second season of “I Am Not Okay With This,” Variety has confirmed.

“I Am Not Okay With This” had been renewed after its first season aired back in February, but its renewal had not been announced. “The Society” had been picked up for a second season last July. The team behind “I Am Not Okay With This” had already begun work on writing a second season.

According to an individual with knowledge of the decisions, both shows were well liked internally at Netflix in addition to the critical acclaim they received upon release, but the plug was pulled on both due to the uncertainty around when they could begin production due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a global pandemic rages, it often feels like we’re in a dystopian parallel universe, and wouldn’t it be nice to try to get back to our original timeline where everything is okay. On Netflix’s The Society, that’s exactly what the characters are dealing with. In the series, a group of teens one day find themselves displaced from their town of West Ham, Connecticut, into a parallel town that looks exactly the same, but everyone else is gone, and the town is cut off from the rest of the world by wilderness. Season 1 saw the teens try to create their own society, dubbed as New Ham, with a government, and laws, in a very Lord of the Flies-inspired fashion.

‘The Society’ Creator on Netflix’s ‘Upsetting’ Cancellation of the Show

Christopher Keyser, who created “The Society,” found out Thursday that Netflix was suddenly pulling the plug on his show. The streamer, which also canceled “I Am Not Okay With This,” released a statement Friday saying, “We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID.”

“We spent the last bunch of months getting ready to go back again, dealing with all the COVID protocols,” Keyser told Variety Monday. “And then I got a call from Netflix saying, ‘We have made this decision.’ It was obviously pretty upsetting and abrupt.” Keyser, whose credits include co-creating “Party of Five,” said he and co-executive producer Pavlina Hatoupis spent the rest of Thursday and Friday calling the cast and crew preparing them before the news broke.

Humane Society fares well despite COVID-19

There is something about having a pet that helps brighten a day, relieves stress and brings love to a family.

At the Humane Society of North Central Florida, the adoptions are at 90% of where they would ordinarily be in a non-pandemic environment. An impressive rate considering how COVID-19 has made life more challenging.

But make no mistake, area residents love their dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.

“We have been presently surprised by how many adoptions we have been able to do,” said Margot DeConna, director of advancement at the Humane Society of North Florida. “Since March 16, when our shelter closed for two months, we have done 1,000 adoptions.”

CAPPA scholars honored by Texas Society of Architects

Two University of Texas at Arlington architecture educators recently won 2020 Honor Awards from the Texas Society of Architects.

Bradley Bell, associate professor and director of the School of Architecture in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs, won the award for Outstanding Educational Contributions in Honor of Edward J. Romieniec.

Kathryn Holliday, professor and founding director of the David Dillon Center for Texas Architecture, won the award for Excellence in the Promotion of Architecture through the Media in Honor of John G. Flowers.

Holliday is an award-winning architectural historian, researcher and teacher who is focused on the built environment. She has written numerous articles and essays, as well as her acclaimed book “The Open-Ended City: David Dillon on Texas Architecture,” published in 2019 by the University of Texas Press.

CAPE ELIZABETH — A new booklet that highlights the old trolley line that ran from Cape Casino to Portland is now available.

Created as a fundraiser, the booklet was researched and produced by Cape Elizabeth Historical Preservation Society’s Ellen Van Fleet and Diane Brakeley, said Dan Davidson of Cape Elizabeth.

The booklet is $10 and is available at Jordan’s Farm Market, Pond Cove IGA, Portland Head Light Museum, Drillen’s Hardware and Fiddlehead Florist, he said.

Readers can use the booklet as a tour guide as it takes them along the old trolley line along Shore Road.
