Two more Netflix series will go without a proper ending. On Friday, August 21, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that both The Society and I Am Not Okay With This have been cancelled, and would not be returning for a second season. The news comes nearly a year after Netflix had announced that a second season of The Society was in the works.
In a statement from the streaming service, the cancellations were attributed to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This,” the statement read. “We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID, and we are grateful to these creators.” THR adds that, according to sources, budget increases, scheduling challenges, and the general uncertainty surrounding the entire pandemic were all allegedly part of the streaming service’s decision to forego both shows.
Stars of The Society, including Kathryn Newton reacted to the cancellation. Kathryn confirmed she received the sad news on Friday morning, and she thanked fans for sharing support on social media. “Everything was written. I can’t even believe it,” she said.
Joined by costar Gideon Adlon on Instagram Live, the pair confirmed that the series was previously scheduled to resume filming in the near future. “We’ve all actually been waiting to go back…We thought we were going back pretty soon, actually,” Gideon said. “I’m sorry we left it on such a cliffhanger; we didn’t want that.”
